How Much Does A Palm Tree Weigh – Quick Tips

Sharing is caring!

The palm tree is a beautiful houseplant. Mature one is quite common in public spaces and halls, adding a sophisticated tropical ambiance to the room.

At the same time, small palms are sometimes used as ornamental house plants. With these trees, they are easy to grow for you need a lot of suns and more water, then you will be fine.

This statement is true for some types of palms because there are about a thousand varieties of these plants. Some palms can be quickly flooded with frequent watering, while others prefer shade and more moist soil.

Then, how much does a palm tree weigh? This is the most crucial question, which many gardeners ask.

How Much Does A Palm Tree Weigh?

It varies depending on the species. For instance, Palmettos weighs about 100 pounds per foot, Pindos weighs 500 pounds per foot, and Canary island dates weigh 1000 pounds per foot. Also, preserved palms typically weigh 3 to 30 pounds per foot.

How To Grow A Palm Tree

This variety of palm trees in the world has about one and a half dozen species. And only four of them are common. The most common type is the finger date. Unfortunately, the palm tree will not bear fruit in apartments since the air temperature must be at least 36 °C.

The plant can be grown at home in two ways: by the branching method (but it should be borne in mind that it is very problematic to find the right branch of the palm tree) or grow your tree from fresh dates or dried fruit. Here is how to grow palm trees.

1. Seed preparation

To increase the chances of a positive result, it is better to prepare several palm seeds for planting, given that the germination percentage ranges from 40 to 60 percent. To germinate faster, it is necessary to clear the pulp so as not to provoke the process of rotting in the soil.

The bone must be rinsed and dried. Then the seeds are placed in a small container, poured with warm water, and put in direct sunlight or on a battery for a couple of days, periodically changing the water.

2. Soil preparation

You need to prepare the soil before you sow palm seeds. Since large palms are extremely heavy and require special equipment to plant them, it is advisable to find an area with open access.

Planting a palm tree on a plain or low hill in your main yard will be much easier than growing on a steep hillside or backyard.

3. Sowing

Seeds should be planted in a shallow pot because the roots will not grow long. First, as expected, make the drainage (pebbles, pieces of brick) on top and a mixture of turf and sand.

There should be twice as much sand because this is the best potting soil for plants. Therefore, do not forget it and, when finishing preparing the ground, pour sand into the pots with a layer of 4‒5 cm, in which you plant your unique seeds at a distance of about 3 cm from each other.

Now pour the sand with water at room temperature and wait for the result. It will appear in about a month. Something will emerge from the ground, entirely unlike a palm tree.

But you should not be upset because the plant will look like a palm tree when it has the seventh leaf. But with the first leaf, the plant needs to be transplanted into a separate small pot. Some species do not reproduce by seeds but by offspring, and this is even easier.

You can grow a palm tree in a winter garden, house, and apartment. The main thing is to be spacious because the house palm does not like tightness.

What it adores is light. The palm trees feed on it just like the tasty substances for them, which they extract from the earth with their strong roots.

The only condition is that the light must be of soft quality because indoor palms cannot stand direct sunlight. But this problem can be solved simply by diffusing the light with the help of an ordinary tulle curtain.

4. Transplanting palm trees

Young palms up to three years old need an annual transplant. Palms older than three years are usually replanted once every three to four years.

In between, the topsoil can be replaced. They do not like to transplant palm trees, so it must be done as carefully as possible to minimize damage to the roots.

You can choose a pot suitable for transplanting by examining the root system. If the roots have grown closer to the walls, you need a container of a larger diameter, and if it is mostly down, it means deeper.

Palm trees grow poorly in nutrient-poor substrates. As a soil, you can use both purchased mixtures specifically for palm trees and prepare by yourself.

The composition should be something like this: 2 parts of clay-sod soil, two parts of humus-leaf, 1 part of peat, 1 part of rotted manure, 1 part of sand, and some charcoal.

A prerequisite is a thick drainage layer. Watering for the first two weeks after transplanting should be very moderate so that the affected roots may not rot.

5. Top dressing

Since palm trees need a lot of nutrients, it will not work to meet all the needs only with regular transplants. Top dressing for such large plants is a must. They are produced during the growing season, stopping only during winter dormancy, when the plant stops active growth.

If the palm tree is in the fresh air in summer, feeding should be done every 7-10 days. Indoor palms should be fertilized once every two weeks. Do not forget that all fertilizers are applied to the pot only on wet soil; that is, the plant must first be watered with clean water.
