Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Grow Zucchini from Scraps

Now that you have all the items you need let’s dig right in and grow the zucchini.

Step 1: Preparing the Scraps

There are various types of zucchinis available. Make sure to choose the one that you like. You would want to grow the one whose taste you love, and once you have your favorite zucchini’s scraps, it is time to prepare them.

Clean off the leftovers and scraps of your zucchini and scoop out the seeds with your fingers or a spoon. Wash the seeds thoroughly with clean water and put them on a paper towel. Gently pat them to dry and place them in a paper bag.

Pro tip: Use mature zucchini seeds as they can germinate easily. Immature seeds will not germinate.

Put your seeds in a tray and spread them. Please place them in a sunny spot to dry them completely. It can take approximately 2 to 3 days to dry your seeds completely. Once your seeds are dry, they are ready to be sown.

Step 2: Get the Right Pot

Zucchini thrives in good drainage soil. So, when choosing a pot, be sure that the pot has a good drainage system. Buy a pot with a drainage hole or DIY any ceramic pot. It is advised to plant zucchini in a small pot first and once it starts growing, replant it in the garden.

Zucchini often has difficulty adapting to a new environment. So, it is important to know how to replant zucchini to avoid the shock properly.

Step 3: Get the Right Potting Mix

Using the right kind of potting mix is extremely important to ensure the healthy growth of your zucchinis. Even though zucchini can grow in any soil, the best type of soil to use is the one rich in loam. To further improve the quality and texture of the soil, use a 3-inch layer of organic compost.

Check the pH of the soil. The optimal pH range for zucchini is somewhere between 6.0 to 6.8. if the soil has low pH (high acidity), it will result in the yellowing of the leaves and stunt the growth of zucchini. Maintain the soil temperature to 60-70 degrees.

Step 4: Sowing the Seeds

Add your potting mix to the pot and water it. Once your potting mix is ready, it is time to plant the seeds. Make a 2 to the 3-inch hole with your fingers in the soil. Sow 3 or 4 seeds and lightly cover them with soil. Only plant 3-4 seeds in a 20-inches diameter pot.

The reason for planting 3 to 4 seeds is to be safe if some seeds do not germinate. Once the seeds germinate and grow a few inches tall, remove the weaker and smaller ones, leaving only the strongest plant. Make sure to leave enough spaces between the seeds so that they can grow properly.

After sowing the seeds, water them. Nut remember not to overwater.

Step 5: Temperature Requirements

Zucchini is a summer fruit, and it thrives in warm temperatures. To get the best harvest, grow your zucchinis in the early summer season and maintain a temperature of about 70 degrees.

If you live in colder climates, cover your zucchinis nighttime or grow them in a greenhouse to regulate the temperature. To outsmart the frost, you can also add a layer of mulch.

Step 6: Watering the Zucchini Plants

Zucchini plants require a good amount of water to grow well. But it certainly does not mean to overwater the plants and leave them soggy. That may result in root rot and kill the plant. Just water the plants thoroughly once every week during springtime and twice during the warmer season.

Overwater can cause many diseases and fungal infections and also attract pests. While watering, remember not to water the leaves. Only water the stem and soil. It is done to avoid insects and droopy leaves.

Step 7: Sunlight

Zucchini loves the Sun! Expose your zucchini plants to 6-8 hours of daily sunlight, preferably in the early morning and the late evening sun. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight might result in burning the plant and leaves.

Step 8: Fertilizer

To ensure your zucchini gets enough nutrients for their healthy growth, you may also use fertilizers once a month. It will result in a healthy and tasty harvest.

Now watch your zucchinis grow and enjoy the harvest!

Bonus Tips for Zucchini’s Care

  • Zucchini plants are highly susceptible to pests’ infestations, so keep your eye out for any pests. Some pests that love zucchini plants are squash bugs, powdery mildew, squash vine borers, and bacteria wilt.
  • The best time to plant zucchini is in the mid of July.
  • Keep removing yellowing and wilting leaves and prune the plant to ensure healthy growth.

  • Use mulch to prevent overwatering, pests, and prevent frost.
  • Zucchini is quite a bulky plant, and it needs ample space to grow. Be sure to provide enough space between the plants, sunlight, and aeration to prevent any diseases.
