Hoya Archboldiana Care Tips

1.       Soil

Hoya Archboldiana needs soil with a pH of 6.4 – 7.3. Such acidity is in Soddy, humus, and deciduous soils. To obtain the optimal soil for the development of Hoya Archboldiana, you can take it in equal proportion and add a little sand and compost.

Many experienced flower growers recommend adding charcoal and coarse vermiculite. At the bottom of the container for planting, it is necessary to pour a layer of expanded clay (1.5-2 cm). If you buy soil in a store, a substrate for violets is suitable.

2.       Lighting

Hoya Archboldiana prefers good lighting and can easily tolerate direct sunlight. But in the active sun, burns can form on the vine’s leaves.

Hoya Archboldiana can be placed on the western and eastern windows. If the plant is located on the south window, it is better to create diffused light in the summer.

3.       Watering

Hoya Archboldiana does not like waterlogging. The frequency and volume of watering in summer and winter are different. For flowers to form from spring to autumn, watering in winter should be minimized, and the plant should have a dormant period.

When Hoya Archboldiana actively develops shoots and flowers in summer, watering is needed but moderate. Stagnation of moisture in the pot is unnecessary, and the earth should be moderately moist.

4.       Fertilizer

Hoya Archboldiana needs to be fertilized as it grows. It should be fertilized in two weeks. Water the plant the day before.

Fertilizers containing nitrogen can cause the active growth of shoots and reduce inflorescences. It is convenient to use ready-made liquid fertilizers containing magnesium and phosphorus.

5.       Temperature

Hoya Archboldiana prefers normal room temperature, and the air should not be cold. Essentially, the most optimal temperature is 16 °C to 35 °C.

The air must not stagnate, and regular room ventilation is necessary. In winter, a temperature below +15 C should not be allowed. In the cold, Hoya Archboldiana foliage usually turns yellow.

The plant is well disposed of for bathing because it loves a warm shower. The leaves at this time are carefully wiped with a sponge or cloth.

6.       Top dressing

Hoya Archboldiana should be fed 1-2 times a month from March to October, but it is better to give the plant the opportunity to rest in winter.

As for fertilizers, you can use both organic and mineral fertilizers, and the main thing is not to overdo it with the dosage. Hoya Archboldiana refers to those plants hibernating during the winter months and gaining strength for a new spring flowering.

7.       Transplant

Hoya Archboldiana should not be transplanted often. During transplantation, the plant’s roots are slightly damaged, after which it recovers for a relatively long time.

So, one is supposed to transplant it after one year. During transplantation, the main goal is to renew the soil, but the pot must be cramped; otherwise, the plant will not bloom.

Any soil mixture is suitable because the flower growers use universal soil for this plant. The capacity for planting should be small, with a hole for draining excess water. Expanded clay is laid out with the bottom layer, which acts as drainage and helps to avoid stagnant water in the soil.

Propagation methods

a)       Propagation by layering

Propagation by layering is good because a new plant can bloom in the year of planting. A branch of an adult flower is slightly cut, covered with moistened moss, and covered with a polyethylene film.

After the appearance of the roots, this branch is cut off and transplanted into a separate pot. You can immediately put such a branch in a new container, fix it with moss, and then cut off the shoot from the plant after rooting has passed.

b)      Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are the most common method of propagation. There should be at least two internodes on the handle, but ideally 3-4. The cutting donor should be last year; that is, it should have an age of 1-1.5 years.

Place the cutting in a water container with the soil having 1 part of perlite and 1 part of fine expanded clay. Also, mix moss, vermiculite, fine expanded clay, or polystyrene, then wait for the roots to appear.

Pests and diseases

Hoya Archboldiana can be affected by adverse environmental conditions like excessive watering, lack of light, and nutrients. For example, irregularly shaped leaves may appear from insufficient watering.

Likewise, Hoya Archboldiana can be affected by infectious diseases and organisms like fungi, viruses, and bacteria. White, gray, or black plaque on the leaves indicates the presence of spores of the fungus.

Rot, wilting, and spotting also occur under the influence of microorganisms. To cure the plant, it is necessary to destroy all pests.

Wash, the Hoya Archboldiana, leaves with soapy water and treat them with a fungicide against pests. Besides, this plant is infected by powdery mildew, which appears with excessive humidity. In this case, the plant requires treatment with Thiovit, Topaz, copper oxychloride, and Quadris SK.

The nematode can attack hoya Archboldiana. When attacked by this pest, the plant stops growing and developing, and the affected areas form on the roots. It turns yellow at the beginning and then brown.

To destroy the root nematode, the plant is sprayed with an insecticide, the roots washed with warm water (50-55 degrees), and transplanted into another pot and soil.

Conclusion

Hoya Archboldiana is an ornamental and attractive flowering and drought-tolerant vine plant. Its leaves are large and oval-shaped and narrow down to the sharp tip at an edge.

In the same case, the flowers are collected bell-shaped bright red flowers with white color under the corona. This plant is a favorite for different gardeners and grows well following the above care tips.
