Lemon Thread False Cypress care tips

1.       Soil

The soil for Lemon Thread False Cypress should consist of peat soil, Soddy soil, sand, and leafy soil. Pre-prepared soil must be poured into a pot or container, moistened, and compacted.

2.       Lighting

If Lemon Thread False Cypress is on a windowsill on the west or east side, it will need to be shaded at certain hours. Accordingly, in summer, it is not placed on the south window.

Lack of excessive light is harmful to Lemon Thread False cypress as it will negatively affect the development and growth of the plant. The branches will stretch firmly upwards and crumble and then turn yellow.

3.       Temperature

When growing Lemon Thread False cypress at home, it is crucial to observe the temperature. Consider the fact that the natural conditions of the plant are subtropical. In summer, the optimum temperature for the Lemon Thread False cypress is around 20-30 degrees Celsius.

The plant’s root system freezes completely during frosts, so you need to create the optimum temperature.

4.       Watering

Lemon Thread False cypress should be watered abundantly two times a week in summer. The roots can get sick with excess moisture, so you need to wait for the soil to dry.

Water temperature during irrigation should be at room temperature. Lemon Thread False cypress is sensitive to cold water, so it must not be watered for at least a day. In the cold season, it is watered once every two weeks, but at the same time, make sure that the earthen ball does not dry out.

5.       Air humidity

Lemon Thread False cypress can easily tolerate drought, but spraying a young plant with water is better. The plant grows better with high humidity. If the moisture in the apartment is low in winter, a pot of Lemon Thread False cypress can be placed in a tray filled with wet expanded clay.

6.       Top dressing

Lemon Thread False cypress needs to be fed twice a month during its active growth, i.e., from March to October. You can use complex mineral fertilizers. If sufficient fertilizer is applied during planting, the plant does not need to be fed soon.

7.       Transplanting

The Lemon Thread False cypress plant should be transplanted as it grows. It is best to do this in March-April, and for plants over five years old, it is enough to change the top layer of soil once a year. At the same time, the pot’s diameter should increase each time, but not more than 2 cm per year.

Loose fertile and neutral soil is suitable for Lemon Thread False cypress. It should contain Soddy and leafy soil, peat, humus, and sand. You can also take ready-made universal soil.

Typically, it is paramount to offer the plant with pebbles or expanded clay. If desired, you can grow Lemon Thread False cypress in the same container with laurel, thyme, or basil.

Propagation methods

a)      Propagation by seeds

Seeds are harvested from mature open cypress cones. After harvesting, they must be placed in the refrigerator for 3-4 months. The container prepared for planting is filled with drainage from crushed pieces of bark and soil mixture for conifers, moistening the soil.

Within 3-4 weeks, the earth must be wet. By the end of the 4th week, the seeds should germinate. At this time, it is necessary to provide the sprouts with diffused lighting. Seedlings are transferred to separate pots when they grow up to 5–6 cm.

b)      Propagation by layering

Propagation by layering is relevant for this plant. You need to take a second pot of soil and place it next to the donor container. A sprig of a donor plant is bent to the ground of a new pot and then cut the bark on it.

Press with a stone or other device to not straighten the shoot. Then sprinkle the layering with soil and water it. As soon as the shoot takes root, it is cut off from the mother plant.

c)       Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are a faster propagation method. Likewise, the cut is harvested during pruning, somewhere in April. The branches are cut off with a knife. After cleaning the bottom of the cutting from scaly leaves, it is dipped in a biostimulant solution for 24 hours.

Then take it out, treat the cut with coal powder, deepen it into the ground, and water it. Cover the stalk with a jar or film, continue to ventilate, and water regularly. It takes about two months for the cutting to fully root.

Pests and diseases

Lemon Thread False cypress trees are highly resistant to diseases and pests. However, sometimes scale insects, and spider mites can settle on such a tree, and root rot can also appear. Scale insects suck out vegetable juice from Lemon Thread False cypress.

As a result, it begins to dry, and its leaves fall off. To destroy these pests, it is necessary to treat the plant with nuprid, while in most cases, several sprays are required to achieve a lasting effect.

If spider mites settle on a Lemon Thread False cypress, the plant will turn yellow, and its leaves will fall. To get rid of such pests, treating the tree several times with a break of 7 days with an acaricidal agent is recommended.

If there is water stagnation in the soil, it will lead to fungal diseases such as root rot. Good prevention against this disease is a thick drainage layer in the planting hole, which is done during planting.
