North Star Dwarf White Spruce Care Tips

1.       Lighting

The plant needs sufficient light. The light should be soft and diffused. It is necessary to shade the North Star Dwarf White Spruce to avoid direct sunlight on it in the summer.

Sunburn can spoil the delicate leaves, covering the surface with brown spots. Lack of lighting can adversely affect the variegated color of the leaves.

It becomes uniformly green and loses all its decorative effect. In winter North Star Dwarf White Spruce needs additional artificial lighting.

Ordinary photo lamps are suitable for this, which will extend the daylight hours for the plant. North Star Dwarf White Spruce is best placed near a window facing east or west.

2.       Soil

The best soil for North Star Dwarf White Spruce is humus-enriched and loamy soil that retains water and has good drainage and breathability. Too heavy and acidic soil is often why the leaves dry. Soil temperature must be constantly monitored.

3.       Watering

Excess and lack of watering are harmful to the North Star Dwarf White Spruce. Therefore, the measure should be observed. In hot weather, watering is more plentiful and is done immediately as soon as the topsoil dries out.

In winter, water less often, about one time per week. To prevent stagnation of moisture in the pot, it is necessary to plant a flower in loose soil. North Star Dwarf White Spruce should often be irrigated with warm settled water in the heat.

4.       Humidity

With a lack of moisture, the leaves of North Star Dwarf White Spruce will dry. They must be provided with more than 70% air humidity or sprayed regularly. You can also place the North Star Dwarf White Spruce pot in a pebble saucer filled with water just below the pot’s base.

5.       Temperature

Although North Star Dwarf White Spruce is a tropical flower, it is wary of heat. It needs a moderate temperature regime also no sudden changes. And in winter, drafts are contraindicated for the flower, as, indeed, at any time of the year. Typically, it can do well in areas with cool summers and cold winters.

6.       Fertilizing

Feed the North Star Dwarf White Spruce once a year.  In feeding, you need to use only half the dose recommended by the manufacturer. To not destroy the plant, this advice needs to be followed strictly. Feeding should begin in mid-spring. Finish fertilizing at the end of summer.

7.       Transplant

The North Star Dwarf White Spruce needs periodic transplants. Young flowers are transferred to new containers once a year. For mature plants, the period between transplants is two years. Carry out this procedure as carefully as possible and only in the spring.

When transplanting into a new container, drainage is first poured, and then the soil is prepared in advance. The composition is placed in a layer of 2 cm.

The roots of North Star Dwarf White Spruce are carefully lowered into the pot and sprinkled with the remaining soil mixture. Do not compact the soil too much.

Propagation methods

a)      Propagation by seeds

Seeds of North Star Dwarf White Spruce are harvested in autumn from ripe cones and stratified for two months. Then the sowing is carried out in peat, deepened by 2 cm, and left in a greenhouse in the light.

With the advent of seedlings, the shelter is removed, and then the seedlings grow up to 3 years in the greenhouse. Then, the seeds can be transplanted into open ground.

b)      Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings can be cut from a tree older than eight years. The ends of shoots 10 cm long with a piece of bark will do. The stalk is dipped with the lower end in a root formation stimulator and planted in a mixture of sand, peat, and perlite.

The container is placed in a greenhouse, put in a warm and shaded place. Even after the roots appear, the North Star Dwarf White Spruce continues to grow in the greenhouse for four years, after which it can be transplanted into open ground.

Diseases and pests

The most common diseases for North Star Dwarf White Spruce are yellowing and leaf fall. The main reasons for this may be insufficient watering and dry air. In such cases, it is necessary to reconsider the conditions in which the flower lives.

The disease can easily be confused with natural aging, which affects only the lower layer of leaves, while improper care involves the entire plant.

If North Star Dwarf White Spruce is in a room with dry or cold air, then the leaves wither and dry and twist and then fall off. If the lighting regime is not observed from direct sunlight, burns may appear on the leaves, manifesting themselves as yellow-brown spots.

Another problem is the pests that infect North Star Dwarf White Spruce. If a web, a white coating, a sticky film, and white spots appear, these may be signs of pests. The most common are scale insects, ticks, thrips, spiders, and larvae. If pests are found, it is necessary to treat the plant with insecticides.

Conclusion

North Star Dwarf White Spruce is a unique plant that can grow to a height of 12 feet at maturity and spread to about 4 feet. The plant can fill the ground and is not very long, making it suitable for planting under the power lines. It gives a good appearance in the homestead when taken care of very well.
