Philodendron White Knight: Care and maintenance

1. Lighting

Many Philodendron species require bright but diffused light during daylight hours. This is especially true with Philodendron White Knight. In insufficient light, it will begin to stretch.

The leaves begin to shrink and lose their bright color. Therefore, if you put a flowerpot with a flower near a lighted window in an openwork shade, you will not go wrong.

It is in such places that Philodendron White Knight fully reveals their beauty. Direct sun rays can spoil the appearance of the leaves, so it is better to exclude them from falling on the plant thoroughly.

2. Temperature

The air temperature in the room during the spring-summer period should be at least 18 – 26 ° C. If the temperature rises higher, make sure that the white knight is watered abundantly, and the humidity in the room is higher.

Otherwise, the flower will lose its decorative effect from the heat. In winter, in a room with Philodendron White Knight, the temperature should not fall below 12 ° C. This plant does not tolerate sudden temperature changes at any time of the year.

Do not place a flower pot near heating devices, air conditioners, or windows while airing the room because Philodendron White Knight does not like drafts either.

Ignoring this rule will lead to the fact that the leaves on the flower will begin to grow unevenly. The same will happen with the growth of the entire plant. The soil temperature should be the same as the air temperature, even slightly higher.

It is better not to keep the white knight on cold windowsills. If there is no other place, put thick support made of wood or foam plastic under the pan of the pot and fence it off from the cold glass with heat-insulating material.

3. Soil

The soil in a pot of Philodendron White Knight should always be slightly moist. Stable and constant moisture in the substrate guarantees that the plant will feel good. In drought, the leaves will dry out and fall off, and if over-watered, they will turn yellow.

Water the next time the topsoil is two fingers dry, regardless of the season. Only in summer will the soil dry out much earlier, and in the heat, you will water almost daily, and in winter – once a week or less.

Monitor the soil condition, and do not forget that Philodendron White Knight loves slightly wet soil, not overwatered soil. Use water for irrigation that is separated, slightly warmer than room temperature.

If you water this plant with tap water, this will quickly lead to salinization or alkalization of the soil and provoke the death of the plant. But rain or meltwater will do just fine.

4. Humidity

Philodendron White Knight grows well at high ambient humidity. You must achieve this by all methods known and available to you. Moisten the surrounding space near the flower with a spray bottle.

Spray the aerial roots, leaves, and the support to which the plant is attached. The support should never dry completely.

Wipe the plant leaves with a damp cloth. This procedure should be carried out regularly, as the large leaves of Philodendron White Knight quickly become covered with dust.

Do this carefully because, despite the sometimes colossal size, the leaves are very fragile. Place beautiful wide containers with water next to the flower, the evaporation of which will create a humid microclimate near the plant.

In the summertime, Philodendrons love to be bathed in the shower. If your copy allows such procedures because of its size, then bathe it every week.

5. Sowing

Sow Philodendron White Knight in February-April or directly into open ground in April-May, when the soil warms up to 16-20 ° C, choosing warm sunny places for this.

The seeding depth is no more than 0.5 cm. Seedlings appear in 2-3 weeks at a temperature of 18-22 ° C. Prefers well-lit, wind-protected areas with loose, fertile, and well-drained soil. Feels great on compost heaps.

6. Transfer

Philodendrons white knight is among those plants whose root system grows more slowly than the ground part. Young, newly planted plants grow quietly in one pot for a year if you planted a plant with a margin of 2-3 cm more than the root system.

Transplant adult plants every 3-4 years. Their roots will surely be woven into a tight ball by this time. Plan a transplant at the end of March – the beginning of April.

Transfer the plant with a lump of earth into a pot, 3-4 cm wider and 5-7 cm higher than before. Place the support in the pot immediately.

It is not advisable to use a pot that is too large because this can cause waterlogging of the soil and, as a result, root rot. Pre-lay a good layer of drainage material and half of its height at the bottom of the pot.

It is better if these are pieces of brick, pebbles, large pebbles, then the stability of the pot will be better.

Then use a layer of fresh soil. Fill all the voids inside the pot with the same soil after placing the transplanted bush there.

Ensure that all the plant roots are covered with soil, and the root collar is not buried. Water the soil, and if the soil has settled heavily, add more soil to the pot and water again. Drain excess water from the pot.

7. Top dressing

To maintain the decorative appearance of the white knight throughout the year, it must be fed regularly. Philodendrons feed on mineral salts from raindrops, excrement of birds, animals and insects, and fallen and rotted leaves in the wild.

In indoor growing, you will have to compose fertilizer, which should include complexes with nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, in the first place. Use liquid, complex fertilizers better.

Philodendron White Knight responds well to organic feeding. Manure diluted in water to a light straw color is an excellent option.

Be sure to fulfill one condition by making any top dressing only after abundant watering. This will protect the plant’s root system from a high concentration of salts and feed the plant not to feel the excess fertilizer in the soil.

In winter, if the plant is warm and in the light, feed it once a month. It is not worth feeding in a cool room. During the rest of the year, it is advisable to feed the Philodendron White Knight every two weeks, or even better every week with a half dose.

3. Horizontal layering

The bark on one of the side shoots is cut with a sharp, sterilized blade. The place of the cut is wrapped with sphagnum. Philodendron White Knight is moistened with a spray bottle several times a day.

After a month, roots will sprout on the shoot then the shoot is cut off and planted in a substrate for philodendrons as an independent plant.

Pests and diseases

Philodendron White Knight is not susceptible to any diseases found in domestic plants. The only problem can be the decay of the earthen root, which begins due to overflow and stagnation of water in the pot.

If you exclude the factor of waterlogging, then the philodendron white knight will heal itself. But you can help the plant heal faster if you remove the root parts damaged by rot.

Very rarely, mainly thrips, scale insects, spider mites, or mealybugs can get on the Philodendron white knight from neighboring plants. Getting rid of them is not tricky. One insecticide treatment or a simple shower is enough.
