Thai Sunrise Philodendron – A brief Introduction

Before we discuss how we can take care of a philodendron Thai sunrise, it will be helpful to first dedicate a brief discussion to learning a bit more about the plant itself and its important characteristics.

The Thai Sunrise is one of the rarest Philodendrons out there. So, as you might expect, it is pretty popular among rare plant enthusiasts and collectors.

One glance at this plant, and you immediately realize that it stands out from your usual crowd of houseplants. The plant boasts dark green- and lime-coloured leaves (heart-shaped) that are glossy and grow up to 7 to 10 inches long.

The colourful leaves grow on yellowish-brown stems that come into contrast with each other and enhance the beauty of this plant. Moreover, this plant is known to be a climber, so it is usually grown near a totem or a wet wall inside home gardens which provides it with a structure to climb on.

Overall, the Thai sunrise can reach a height of 3 meters if kept under the correct growing conditions. In light of all of the factors stated above, there is no doubt that the Thai Sunrise will make for an excellent addition to your collection of houseplants.

If you have pets inside your house, though, it might be safer not to get this plant. This is because the Philodendron Thai Sunrise is known to be toxic. You don’t need to worry about its toxicity if you do not have animals inside your house.

Top 4 Caring tips for The Thai Sunrise Philodendron

Now we will consider the specific nutritional and environmental needs of the Thai Sunrise Philodendron and look at what one needs to do in order to care for it properly.

Watering

As a rule, it is best to water your philodendron once every two weeks. Of course, you will have to remain vigilant, and if your plant shows signs of underwatering, you will need to increase the frequency with which you water your Thai Sunrise plant.

During colder seasons, this frequency can be reduced because this is when your plant’s growth will be the slowest.

Light

The plant grows best when kept in bright, indirect sunlight. If you’re growing this plant indoors, we recommend growing it next to a window covered by a thin curtain.

This should ensure that your plant receives bright indirect sunlight. Be careful not to place this plant under a blazing sun for prolonged periods; this will cause its leaves to burn and, eventually, the plant to die.

Soil

Most Philodendrons do well when kept in nutritious, well-draining soil. The Thai Sunrise is no exception to this rule. A good mix of the standard substrate with sand and perlite will do just fine. To facilitate drainage, you may poke holes under your plant’s container.

Repotting

The Thai Sunrise is a fast-growing plant. Due to this, you may find yourself having to report it from time to time. Usually, when you see the roots of this plant protruding from the drainage hole of its container, it is time to report. A pot that is two to three inches larger will be appropriate.

Make sure that your soil mix is broadly the same as the one that your plant was previously planted in. The Philodendron Thai Sunrise does not appreciate change.

How to Propagate a Thai Sunrise Philodendron

The most effective way to propagate a Thai Sunrise Philodendron is through the use of stem cuttings in the water method. Simply follow the guidelines we have given below.

Begin by ensuring that your plant is strong enough for propagation. If it seems weak, take some time to properly care for it and bring it to health before you begin the process of propagation.

Cut a few inches of the stem just below a node. Then, make sure you remove the lower leaves of your cutting before placing them inside a container with water.

It is preferable if the water is lukewarm, but it won’t be an issue at all to use water at room temperature. Keep replacing your water every few days as required and wait till your cuttings’ roots have grown out to be at least 3 inches long.

At this point, you may take it out of your water container and place your cuttings in a pot with a suitable soil mix. Make sure that this is well-draining.

If it is not, poking holes at the bottom of the container can help drain it better. The process of propagation works best during the early spring season, so schedule your propagation accordingly.

Bottomline

The Philodendron Thai Sunrise is a great fit for most home gardens. The plant requires bright indirect sunlight, moderate amounts of watering, well-draining soil, and surrounding temperatures of around 16 – 24 degrees Celsius to grow properly.

The plant is known to be toxic, so it is best not to grow it if you have animals around. If you wish to propagate your Philodendron Thai Sunrise plant, you can do that easily using the stem cutting method outlined above.
